Vision ABQ was incorporated in 2009 as the financial arm of the Grant Chapel AMEC Lay Organization’s Scholarship Award.
The Grant Chapel AMEC Lay Organization began giving out scholarships to student church members only in 2001. Mrs. Bernice Lee donated $1,000 to for the first scholarship. Each year since then, the donations increased for the student church members. Most of the donations came from Grant Chapel AMEC membership. The scholarship awards were given out each year during the MLK Jr. Commemorative Breakfast which is hosted by the Grant Chapel AMEC Lay Organization.
The Black Community interest began to grow in The Grant Chapel AMEC Lay Organization's scholarship program, so they created a scholarship committee to develop and score a scholarship application which could be used in the Black Community. Initially every application that was received was granted a $1,000 scholarship. For the next 8 years this growth continued to include more corporate donations as well as community individual donations. The number of scholarships awarded had grown from 1 -3 a year to 15-20 a year. And they each still received $1,000. The management and fundraising responsibilities became overwhelming. This is when Vision ABQ was formed to take over the management and fundraising task of the MLK JR SCHOLARSHIP offered by The Grant Chapel AMEC Lay Organization.
Thanks to our NM Community Sponsors for helping us to raise over $100,000 in scholarship awards given to over 75 students over the past 15 years. Applicants have come from Bernalillo Public Schools, Rio Rancho Public Schools and Las Cruces Public Schools. These students have made the transition from high school to higher learning, regardless of background, heritage, or any other type of status. Let’s keep giving our youth the opportunity to fulfill their education and career dreams.
